About
The Check-in is about making time and place for one another. It's a growing set of offerings that support mental and social well-being in our city, and beyond. It encourages the practice of checking-in with others, in community, and with authenticity. It aims to help connect our personal needs with a range of supports, and bring us together for more face-to-face connection and belonging. The Check-in was started by Joseph Nicholls as part of his commitment to working in mental health, and to instigate the qualities of community that he wants to be a part of. The idea is to keep everything as affordable and accessible as possible. It's mainly voluntary, shared with co-hosts, and supplemented by smallprojects.nz. More ideas, hosts and collaborations are welcome, and new groups will be added over time.
Why
The Check-in holds that we are social and communal creatures who've become distracted into the individual pursuit of security/success. Between work hustle and screen time - we can risk neglecting the simple human need of community, meeting up, and being truly known. We know that regular and intentional groups make strong and beneficial connections. That camaraderie and contribution with others - is an antidote to some of today’s most isolating and troubling trends.
Because we all experience challenges in life... and we're in weird times

I've started The Check-in to walk my own talk! To step beyond critiquing our modern predicament, and help to make some good local things happen. I'm motivated by the conviction that how we meet and treat and relate with each other is crucial for wider changes - toward equity, accountability and a more dignified collective future. My Work: I'm currently studying somatic psychotherapy through ANZSBA and PBANZ. I’ve been training organisations in Mental Health First Response with CoLiberate Ltd, facilitating Human Skills at Dev Academy Aotearoa, and I have over 15 years of hosting consistent peer support groups. I’ve trained and practiced in conflict coaching modalities, facilitated Te Tiriti workshops with The Treaty People, explored ancestral recovery with GATG, and continue to contribute with The Pākehā Project. When I’m not checking in, I'm operating smallprojects.nz, building small-scale things that make life a bit better. Please get in contact with any questions. Joseph
